Snøhetta viewpoint, also known as Tverrfjellhytta, is an architectural building, located in Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park in Norway. The building was designed with the aim of integrating architecture and nature and offering visitors a panoramic view of the mountain peak Snøhetta and the surrounding area, including the musk ox!
Architecture and nature
The Snøhetta Viewpoint is strategically placed to provide panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscape, including Snøhetta Mountain, after which both the building and the architectural firm that designed it are named. The design reflects the philosophy of the architectural firm, namely integrating architecture and nature. The structure of the building therefore consists of a wooden interior (obtained from locally sourced materials) with large floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic views of the surroundings. The wooden core transitions into a steel exterior. This ensures a balance between warmth and robustness. In 2011, the Snøhetta viewpoint in Norway was even named world building of the year!
Musk oxen
In addition to a beautiful view, the Snøhetta viewpoint also has an educational function. You will find more information about the geological history of the region and the unique flora and fauna of the Dovrefjell area, including the musk ox! With its size and thick, long coat, the musk ox is one of the most iconic inhabitants of the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park. These animals, native to the Arctic regions of Greenland and North America, were introduced to the Norwegian National Park in 1940 and have since adapted well to the rugged mountainous landscape of Dovrefjell. Musk oxen are herbivores and mainly eat grasses, herbs and mosses. Through their grazing behavior they play an important role in maintaining the vegetation in the park. During your visit to the park and the Snøhetta viewpoint it is possible to observe the musk ox in its natural habitat. However, always stay at least 200 meters away and make sure you do not disturb the animals. Because although the musk ox is usually calm, they can react aggressively when they feel threatened. Other animals you may see from the viewpoint include reindeer, elk and arctic foxes.
How do you get to the Snøhetta viewpoint?
The Snøhetta viewpoint is located in an easily accessible location in the national park. You can get there by car via the E6 and turn off near the village of Hjerkinn to the Snøhetta parking lot. From the parking lot there is a well-maintained path towards the viewpoint. This path is about 1.5 km long with an elevation gain of 100 meters. The viewpoint is therefore accessible to a wide range of visitors. Please note that the building is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. It is therefore best to visit the Snøhetta viewpoint in spring, summer or autumn. However, the park itself is open in winter and ideal to visit with cross-country skis or snowshoes.
